Nestled in a field among deciduous trees and adjacent to the Tolt River, this home's orientation and design takes advantage of active and passive solar. Light is emitted under the eaves into the home during winter, while the same roof blocks the summer's heat gain. Ample fenestration, relights, and open spaces allow natural light to penetrate into the core spaces, allowing artful interplay of natural light from different directional sources. Most of the windows frame beautiful natural vistas on the secluded site.
The project was driven by the owners' and MMBI’s desires to achieve a home that was economical both to build and maintain. The shell is efficient, well insulated, and purposeful in its design. Sustainable practices and materials were employed throughout the project.
An important design parameter was that the building was to be built by its owners, family and friends. The building structure and components needed to be uncomplicated and intuitive to erect. The result is simple yet playful, and accommodated all the owners needs.
